Verbs of Motion in Russian

Russian Verbs of Motion

English has one verb "to go." Russian asks two questions before picking a verb — and then gives you four options. The system looks intimidating in grammar books, but as a beginner you only need the basic four, and the logic is genuinely simple.

Two Questions, Four Verbs

Before saying "go," Russian asks:

  1. On foot or by vehicle?
  2. One specific trip (right now / one direction) — or a repeated habit / round trip?

That's the whole map. Now the details.

Right Now: идти & ехать

Use these for a trip happening now, in one direction: "I'm going (right now, heading there)."

Я иду в магазин.

I'm walking to the store (right now).

Note: One direction, on foot, happening now → иду.

Мы едем в Москву.

We're going (driving/riding) to Moscow.

Note: A city is too far to walk — vehicle → едем.

Куда ты идёшь?

Where are you going?

Note: куда = where TO (direction), где = where AT (location). Motion questions use куда.

Habits: ходить & ездить

Use these for repeated trips ("every day"), round trips ("I went and came back"), or general ability ("the baby already walks").

Я хожу в школу каждый день.

I go to school every day.

Note: Repeated habit → хожу. Words like каждый день (every day), часто (often), обычно (usually) signal ходить/ездить.

Мы часто ездим к бабушке.

We often go (drive) to grandma's.

Note: Repeated + vehicle → ездим.

Side-by-side, the contrast is crisp:

Сейчас я иду в парк. Я хожу в парк каждое утро.

Right now I'm walking to the park. I go to the park every morning.

Note: Same trip, different framing: сейчас → иду; каждое утро → хожу.

Saying Where: в/на + Accusative

Destinations after motion verbs use в (into) or на (onto/to) + the accusative case:

Я еду на работу, а потом иду домой.

I'm riding to work, and then walking home.

Note: на работу (set phrase with на), домой (special adverb meaning 'homeward').

A few nouns take на instead of в — mostly events and open spaces (работа, концерт, почта, рынок). Learn them as phrases.

Common Mistakes

  • Using идти for vehicles. To another city you едешь, not идёшь. (Exception you'll hear: buses and trains 'идут' on schedules — file that away for later.)
  • Using идти for habits. "I go to the gym every day" needs хожу, not иду.
  • где instead of куда. Куда ты идёшь? (where to?), but Где ты? (where at?).
  • Forgetting the accusative. в школу, not в школа — motion changes the ending (that's the next unit's case logic in action).

What You Can Do Now

You can say where you're going now, how (on foot or wheels), and what your routine is: Сейчас я еду на работу. Обычно я езжу на метро. The four-verb grid is the foundation — prefixes and fancy pairs can wait.
