Aspect in Russian
Russian verbs come in pairs: one imperfective (несовершенный вид) and one perfective (совершенный вид). Understanding aspect is crucial for natural-sounding Russian.
What is Aspect?
Aspect describes how an action relates to time:
- Imperfective: Ongoing, repeated, or incomplete actions
- Perfective: Completed, one-time actions with a result
Я читал книгу (imperfective)
I was reading a book
Note: Process emphasized - we don't know if finished
Я прочитал книгу (perfective)
I read the book (and finished it)
Note: Result emphasized - the book is read
Imperfective Aspect
Use imperfective when you want to emphasize:
- Process (action in progress)
- Repetition (habitual actions)
- Duration (how long something lasted)
Я писал письмо два часа
I was writing a letter for two hours
Note: Emphasis on the process and duration
Каждый день я читаю газету
Every day I read the newspaper
Note: Repeated action - imperfective
Perfective Aspect
Use perfective when you want to emphasize:
- Completion (action is finished)
- Result (what was achieved)
- One-time event (happened once)
Я написал письмо
I wrote the letter (it's done)
Note: Emphasis on completion and result
Вчера я прочитал всю книгу
Yesterday I read the whole book
Note: One-time completed action
Common Aspectual Pairs
| Imperfective | Perfective | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| делать | сделать | to do |
| читать | прочитать | to read |
| писать | написать | to write |
| говорить | сказать | to say |
| брать | взять | to take |
How Pairs Are Formed
1. Prefix Addition (most common)
Add a prefix to the imperfective verb:
- писать → написать (to write)
- читать → прочитать (to read)
- делать → сделать (to do)
2. Suffix Change
Change the suffix:
- решать → решить (to decide)
- получать → получить (to receive)
3. Completely Different Roots
Some pairs use different roots:
- говорить → сказать (to say)
- брать → взять (to take)
- класть → положить (to put)
Aspect with Tenses
Past Tense
Both aspects can be used in the past:
- Imperfective past: Я читал (I was reading / I used to read)
- Perfective past: Я прочитал (I read / I have read)
Future Tense
- Imperfective future: Uses "быть" + infinitive
- Я буду читать (I will be reading)
- Perfective future: Uses the perfective verb conjugated
- Я прочитаю (I will read / I will have read)
Завтра я буду читать книгу
Tomorrow I will be reading a book
Note: Process in the future - imperfective
Завтра я прочитаю эту книгу
Tomorrow I will finish reading this book
Note: Completed action in the future - perfective
The Golden Rule
When in doubt, ask yourself:
- Am I focusing on the process or repetition? → Imperfective
- Am I focusing on the result or completion? → Perfective
Mastering aspect takes time, but it's one of the most rewarding aspects of Russian grammar!
